I acquired a softstarter earlier this week.
Yup I don't really need it, but I discovered a problem I thought I would share.
No matter how I tried to search this forum I got (0) results on the topic. Seemed strange to me because I was involved in some of those topics.
This post is a test...
...few instances where breaker has tripped when A/C + fridge & other powered items were run at he same time. So I am thinking that adding a softstart module would be a good idea.
Can anyone recommend a make/model suitable? I see such a wide range of softstart units that say "they work for...
So I was thinking this morning...why are Dometic air conditioners equipped with Micro-Air SoftStarts outlasting stock Dometic units for RV's? Then I remembered long ago when my residential A/C unit had a capacitor failure which seems to be the most common cause of failure in air conditioner...
...issues. In residential ac's when a compressor is struggling they install a hard start capacitor which extends the life of the compressor. Softstarts in RV rooftop units likewise ease the start up burden on the compressor. The less stress the compressor is subject too overtime I suspect...
...the amperes.High amperes means more heat and lower voltage means motors need to work harder to start and run causing again more heat.A softstart device is basically a big capacitor that charges to a higher then required voltage to start the unit then trickles the over power at a rate the air...
...one failure. Because real A/C Technicians don't work in the the RV industry perfectly good units are being replaced.
Digging further, softstart units reduce impact from abrupt starts. This in turn reduces wear on any coil that was improperly fixed in place by the varnishing process so...
Thanks, exactly what i did. New AC unit board controlled 10-12 button thermostats and his is a 5. Wired up, AC & heat pump working fine. He ordered a softstart as well. The dealer sold him the AC unit and softstart and the softstart is the wrong one.
To chime in, I looked at these softstarts and as of today you can drop in a Furrion 18k chill cube which is basically a split unit in a box.The benefit over a softstart s the unit has a built in variable speed compressor and it works great for a top usage of about 1450 watts cranked up all the...
What I am saying is the 1000 investment will return itself in energy savings and efficiency, while the softstart will just help reduce the load when the unit starts up.Most people who are installing these softstarts are doing so to reduce the cost of a inverter or allow a 3000 watt inverter to...
I can only tell you that before the softstart capacitor I couldn't turn on the microwave in my 30 amp coach while the a/c was running without an overload and trip at the pedestal. After, I can run the microwave or a toaster with the a/c running without issue.
So let me see if I am understanding this correctly.
So what I understand is that going out and spending $1000+ on a new Furrion verses spending ~$300 on a SoftStart for a new A/C unit is better?
I would agree with that if your unit has gone south on you but to do that just to get an A/C unit to...
Looking for info from those that have installed softstart equipment on their a/c units. I know @Neal has and I pm’d him but thought it might be worth asking the group about their experiences with these units.
There is a company called Softstart that is advertising units at $50 off and free...
1000% YES. I will never have Dometic roof top A/C's without the easy/softstart. It seems the evidence shows those with them are far outlasting those without. Don't get the cheap knock-offs.

Now if only I could find the...
That was one of the units I was considering just based on other posts. Does that mount up inside the unit? or does it get wired inline between the RV and the unit power feed?
