...one failure. Because real A/C Technicians don't work in the the RV industry perfectly good units are being replaced.
Digging further, softstart units reduce impact from abrupt starts. This in turn reduces wear on any coil that was improperly fixed in place by the varnishing process so...
Thanks, exactly what i did. New AC unit board controlled 10-12 button thermostats and his is a 5. Wired up, AC & heat pump working fine. He ordered a softstart as well. The dealer sold him the AC unit and softstart and the softstart is the wrong one.
Today the Newmar mobile service Mark came to discuss installing the Micro Air softstart. He informed me that Dometic installs a softstart in all Newmar A/C from the factory. This is a Special Order from Newmar factory.
Apparently DP units have softstart.
I now have three unopened MicroAir units...
To chime in, I looked at these softstarts and as of today you can drop in a Furrion 18k chill cube which is basically a split unit in a box.The benefit over a softstart s the unit has a built in variable speed compressor and it works great for a top usage of about 1450 watts cranked up all the...
What I am saying is the 1000 investment will return itself in energy savings and efficiency, while the softstart will just help reduce the load when the unit starts up.Most people who are installing these softstarts are doing so to reduce the cost of a inverter or allow a 3000 watt inverter to...
Looking for info from those that have installed softstart equipment on their a/c units. I know @Neal has and I pm’d him but thought it might be worth asking the group about their experiences with these units.
There is a company called Softstart that is advertising units at $50 off and free...
That’s what I thought. With a microair, it will never exceed 15 and often just 12. Starts at 2amps and slowly goes to 12-15.
That’s the job of a true softstart. The extra capacitor is just the normal fan hard start. Nothing special. Been in all dometic for years.
I can only tell you that before the softstart capacitor I couldn't turn on the microwave in my 30 amp coach while the a/c was running without an overload and trip at the pedestal. After, I can run the microwave or a toaster with the a/c running without issue.
Wow Clodhopper, I commend you if you follow those instructions consistently. Good job for sure.
Sadly, there are also so many other areas of sanitation that most people don’t pay attention to. I hate to even start with watching people hook/unhook their water & sewer systems (and their soft...
careful ! softstarts are just that, designed to control the inrush current needed to start the air conditioner. They will not reduce the required power needed by the air conditioners to actually run. That said, consider Furrions Chill Cube 18K, you can run 2 of these units on a 30 amp service...
Careful….Newmar is not compatible with Furion.
I personally love the furion, but that won’t help the OP.
And softstarter does resolve the issue as the in rush is the problem.
I only need 11amps to run a single 15k air unit or 33 to run all 3
This is down from the 21 starting and 18 running...
Yep, ordinarily you can't run a 15k a/c and a microwave simultaneously off a 30 amp pedestal. Even with softstarts on both a/c's it would be iffy unless there was load shedding involved.
So let me see if I am understanding this correctly.
So what I understand is that going out and spending $1000+ on a new Furrion verses spending ~$300 on a SoftStart for a new A/C unit is better?
I would agree with that if your unit has gone south on you but to do that just to get an A/C unit to...
BTW, if your in Florida, the Mobile tech from Newmar is not very technical. He is a nice guy, but is lacking in technical ability. I would question all information provided by him.
That was one of the units I was considering just based on other posts. Does that mount up inside the unit? or does it get wired inline between the RV and the unit power feed?
1000% YES. I will never have Dometic roof top A/C's without the easy/softstart. It seems the evidence shows those with them are far outlasting those without. Don't get the cheap knock-offs.

Now if only I could find the...
