A visitor left the park today and was making the ¼-mile drive up to Hwy 64 when trouble found him. A car coming the opposite direction drifted across the center line, forcing the Allegro Bus to drift to the outside of the road to avoid a collision. TBut there’s no extra room on that side of the road, and to make matters worse, a deep drainage ditch runs alongside it.

The coach dropped into the ditch and rolled over as far as it could before the bank stopped it, pinning the entry door firmly between the coach and the embankment. That door wasn’t going to open. When we learned what happened, we grabbed a ladder and helped him climb out through the driver’s window. His wife stayed inside with the dogs while everyone waited for the wrecker to arrive.

The other driver? Never slowed down, never came back, never even checked if anyone was okay. Accountability seems to be in short supply these days.

Note: This will certainly bring back bad memories for NWIP who ended up in somewhat the same situation while visiting Alaska a year or so ago.

Ouch!!! Glad there were no serious injuries!

Hope he’s wrecker bill is less than ours was😳. Glad no one injured, coach can certainly be fixed.

Speaking of the coach, how did it fare?

Can’t say for sure. The driver’s side wheels were off the ground, leaving the passenger side of the coach leaning hard against the embankment. There’s bound to be some damage there. I looked underneath and noticed a support bar running from the driver’s side across to the passenger side, not sure what it’s for, but it was resting on the pavement, keeping the transmission from grounding out. So that's positive.

If I had to guess, I don’t think it’s totaled. The owner, however, seemed convinced it was. What do I know, right? Still, he was handling it pretty well, and so was his wife.

The guest had left the park a day early because his Aqua-Hot had quit, and he was headed somewhere to get it fixed. From there, the plan was to visit his daughter and make a few other stops. That trip’s over now.

Poor guy.

Good on him for not just holding his line and letting the other driver plow into him

Wow! Go to hear they are ok. Now to repair the coach.

@Jim … very unfortunate and disappointing that the other driver didn’t even bother stopping. Glad there was a bank to keep it from tipping over. Although all together a different situation, this reminds me of the guy you said that left your Campground and tried to go cross country over the Standing Indian road against your numerous warnings. We know what happened to him. And if I remember correctly, he had borrowed the Coach from his boss I believe.

You mean this clown? Taking the scenic route to bankruptcy.

Holy carp!

In my lane? Hope you are insured. Im not moving
That is the opinion of many truck drivers I have spoken to over the years. Of course, that also comes with its own risk (i.e. debris coming through the windshield and causing injury or death, especially on a class A). I am sure the MH driver did not anticipate damaging his rig, although, unfortunately, it would sustain damage in either case.

Very sad. I would suspect the driver never even looked in the mirror to see what happened to the MH. Respect, care for others, and personal responsibility seems to have faded into antiquity.

Would you have stopped, if you were the other driver - perhaps in your teen years, or driving without a license? None of these are excuses, but this situation demonstrates how far we have fallen, as a “civilized” society.

I understand that curves and trees blocking vision are an issue, but I always keep my eyes far ahead to see potential problems. If I noticed even a hint of bad driving coming at me, I'd be on the air horns to wake them up.

I've gone into battle a few times armed with that beast! And lord, most of the time I'm met with HUGE white eyed results! lol, it can really make an impression. :)
