When we hike, we take only the bear essentials. We saw one with no teeth, turned out to be a gummy bear. We saw a big one last week doing some weird maneuvers. He said his name was Yogi but we later found out it was Teddy.

Yikes, that is one BIG bear!

Having worked in Yellowstone way back when, I have plenty of bear stories but I won't bore you with them. Let's just say I have a HUGE amount of respect those big guys, especially after seeing how fast they can move. Scary that a half-ton animal would give a world-class human sprinter more than just a run for his money.

Just out of curiosity, I did a little research. World-record holder in the 100M sprint, Usain Bolt (Jamaica), reached 27.8 mph about 2/3s of the way through his record-breaking sprint. OTOH, grizzly bears have been clocked in excess of 30 mph over a sustained, two-mile run on an asphalt roadway. It is likely they could be faster on dirt/grass where they could get a little better traction.

The human world record for the mile run is 3:43.13. At the Grizzly's pace, that's a sub-2 minute mile! Impressive...and, something to think about when you're in bear country.
