Weather is beautiful, We are safe, God is good.

We had a blowout of the tag tire in the worst part of the road, but within 5 minutes we had a random tire company stop to help . They have MDOT blocking the lane for us and things are being handled.

I heard the pop and moved over as soon as I could . TPMs went to zero 2 minutes afterwards.

Wowza, glad all are okay. Gorgeous picture though :)

I'm sure all will ask, guessing no indication of something about to happen, it just happened.

glad your safe

I was talking on the phone (Bluetooth hands free) and heard a pop. I knew it was a tire. Was climbing the pass and tried to get over. I thought it was steer tire but turns out it was tag. Once I got as far over as guard rail would allow I saw the tire in mirror. I drove about 100 ft at 3mph and saw tire working itself off rim. Called it quits.

I had a 2 minute thought process to mentally come up with a plan and then TPMs went off….so much for that system.

I called my road side assistance and tire warranty (campers edge) and after about 10 minutes explaining why I don’t have a spare and they need to bring me a tire, I saw a road side truck repair pull in front of me.

We are 2 hrs into waiting for a tire to be brought and then should be good. I will update once this saga is over.

I also note that it was a Michelin! :( I just put six on ours. Can you tell what caused it?

I have had a terrible vibration. Thought it was steer tires. Had them road force balanced and tested and said no problems. I am now wondering if this tire was the problem. I am going to be doing a better check of the tire once it’s not in the traffic lane.

Tire dates are 18th week of 2021, so in the range to replace, but early imho to fail.

It appears no damage to coach.

So the question is when you get new. Michelin or Toyo? I’ve lost faith in Michelin RV tires. Love them for cars. Not RV.

@redbaron , I know you enjoy moving along at relatively high speeds. Mind sharing what your speed was when it failed? Also had you noticed a higher temperature for that tire prior to the incident?

Ok, I thought we replaced tires not to maintain a schedule, but because they might give way.

At the time of the incident, I was doing 54mph. This was a 5% uphill grade, with outside temps of 80F and a total distance traveled from cold of 15 miles.

I heard the explosion and thought it was my front tire and was thinking how amazing the retrobands are. I was passing a semi on the uphill climb and had to let off gas to move over. As I moved lanes I could visually see the tag tire wobble and I allowed my speed to continue to drop naturally as I eased to the shoulder. I then drove about 100 ft, trying to get to the most visible spot when I noticed the tire working off the rim. I stopped there.

I mentioned earlier about a wobble. This started last year leaving Texas for glacier. At that time it was only at 68-70 and not below or above. On the return trip last year it became more pronounced below 60, but 62-68 was fine and that’s where I kept it.

I always assumed it was steer tires as it was felt in the steering, mirrors etc.

This winter I rotated the steering tires and checked them visually while off the coach. They looked great.

we left for Montana this year and noticed a terrible shimmy starting at 25 and staying strong until 62. It was so bad we couldn’t see out the mirrors or keep anything on the table without it bouncing off.

I took the coach to southern tire mart and had them test steering wheel balance. It was off and the rebalanced and did a road force test for runout. Told me tires are now perfect. The shimmy never left and I figured I had a hub, bad tire, or combination. 64 was tolerable.

After this blowout, the coach drives like a Mercedes. No wobble at all at any speed.

Lesson learned: you can’t tell which tire is bad by the feel. Any shimmy or speed related vibrations are potentially a tire giving up.

I will be putting 6 toyos on the rear before I return home.

Good to see you are ok and no damage to the coach. Be
Annoying shimmies - we had a soft shimmy and had tires inspected - all fine.
Finally decided to replace tires due to age and had all road balanced.
Learned something - road force balancing can show an issue that doesn’t appear on just a simple spin.
They showed me the spin balance on an inside 2 rear axle and it all looked good. Than they applied the road force and the shimmy became visible. We had a slightly bent wheel.
I am now a big believer in road force balancing, not just for the front wheels but all positions. Realizing that even if I think I know which wheel position it is coming from - I can be wrong, very wrong.

You mentioned TPMS going to zero 2 minutes after the fact, was this the integrated dash TPMS?

Yes the gen 1 TPMs with the external sensors.

Not very happy with that result.
