BIL wants a fiver

BIL is wanting a fiver. What would be some of the better brands/models? He is thinking 28-32'. He currently has a 1 ton GMC to tow with, but would like to go to a 3/4 ton for a replacement.

I would have said Grand Design but getting disappointed with them lately. Jayco makes a nice smaller 5th wheel.

When BIL sees the weights of the 5th wheel trailers, he's going want to stay with a 1 ton truck!

Lots of things are “ possible” with a trailer but in my opinion a 1 ton is most reasonable for a 5th wheel

I was really asking about which fifth wheels were better in quality. Yes BIL is currently driving a one ton, but it is his daily driver with close to 300k on it. He will be looking to trade in the not to far off future. He really needs to know what the better brands are right now. As he is looking he can check weights and ratings so as to have one that would work with a 3/4 ton if that is the route he decides to go.

No one wants to touch this one In my opinion.

First you need to clearly understand how you intend to use the 5th wheel. Will you be in temperate climate or do you need All Weather. Then how many miles a year and where can you find reliable service. How heavy will you travel. Loaded with everything you might need, like us, or lighter and more mobile.

Most, manufacturers are focused on price point and then weight. Quality past the visible surface is way down the list.
So cheap and light duty parts are used. Absolute minimum DOT spec on brakes, suspension.
Not sure if there is any house build Code on RVs.

Lippert will tell you, after you break their frame, that they have no control over what the manufacturers puts on the frame, Lippert builds the frame to the manufacturer spec.

So my opinion is to determine what you want from a trailer, specifically, then review the internet and local dealers to see what's available. You can ask questions of Salespeople but you will rarely if ever get a useful answer. Their job is to sell not educate. And selling ain't easy.

Once you find a manufacturer that meets your needs, do a factory tour. They should be happy to entertain you.

Last word, what is perfect for us, is not perfect or even close for you. Everyone has different expectations and travel habits.

Good answer, Lots of frames breaking on 5th wheels. There are some shorter 5th wheels on the market that a 3/4 ton will handle. Some are under 30ft. now.

LOL! I just watched that video.....those plumbing connections are absurd.
