I am presently in the market for a Canyon Star 3927 toy hauler. I am a total newbie/novice and have never owned an RV. You guys are probably highly experienced and I am looking for advice. New or used? I plan to use this RV alot. Maybe 12,000miles a year. Plan to see the USA and Canada.
Anybody willing to give me their advice? What should I be sure to consider inaling my purchase?
Thanks for your kindness.

The new Canyon Star is a front engine diesel (340/700 ISB) with air brakes on a Freightliner MC chassis with higher GVWR, GCWR, and NCC - a completely different animal from a 2 year old on an F53. Theres a noticable price bump that goes with it, but probably worth it. Start by studying brochures and specs to see what fits your needs best.

Thanks for your keen insight Joe. I wonder what dealers are actually getting for the 2022 Canyon Star 3927? The market looks to be hot but I don't know what to expect for negotiating purposes as to the "real" starting point.

We recently had someone park across with the new diesel CanyonStar. First I had seen up close so was interested in getting owner’s opinion. Well he was not happy with the ride or noise at all, in fact he was in the process of trading it in. Next night he was back with a new London Aire😳

Know a couple who have the F53/gasser version...they took the new diesel version for a test drive and ordered one. They really liked the diesel.

Safe travels.

It’s really comes down to expectations, IMHO. If you expect it to be better than a gasser you are probably ok. If you expexyit to be like a diesel pusher probably going to be disappointed.

....and you’re not going to get a toy hauler floor plan in anything with a rear engine, so that kind of eliminates any comparison to a DP from the conversation. Really the only question is gas or diesel and with the other benefits of the MC chassis, to me it would only come down to how much I wanted to spend and how soon I wanted one. Having owned an F53 (Bay Star) my preference would be the Freightliner.

That said, I have no experience with the current F53 and with the new drivetrain, and it might be a very acceptable rig. Also my only issue with the old (V10) F53 was the noise, rough ride, and resultant driver fatigue, but if I was only going to do short driving days (250 miles or less) or park it in one place for longer stays, an older Canyon Star might be just fine.

We had a 2015 CS3921 which was the model before the 3927. The main floorplan difference is the 3921 had the Full Wall Slide extended into the bedroom which was great for living space but added weight.

I'm not so sure the F53 Gas version had less NCC than the new diesel. Verify the specs. Also keep in mind that there were a lot of options that added to the weight on the 3927. The 3rd AC unit was an option, same with the drop down bunks etc. Each of those added weight. For long trips w/ kids and dogs we had to only take on a partial tank of fresh water and put a good amount of our supplies in the garage to keep the front axle under it's 9k limit. So we never ran out of weight capacity (came close) but we were always having to put things into the back that we would have ideally had up front.

I don't know how much the change in the FWS configuration or weight of the diesel engine vs gas affects the amount of capacity over each of the axles - so that could be a difference from gas to diesel even if the NCC is the same.

We were generally happy with the CS but moved up after 4 seasons to a 43' Ventana bunk model to get more room (4 humans and 4 dogs - we needed a second living room slide when parked). My wife really wanted the quieter ride of the DP and she didn't have to twist my arm too hard to upgrade.

I really liked the garage - it was very flexible and having that 2nd entry door was really nice - especially when it was raining or muddy it was nice to use that garage entrance.

For the right family the 3927 is a great layout and I found the gas version pretty decent handling except in high wind (39' but only 13tons makes for a pretty big sail). Braking always felt marginal so that would be a big plus for the diesel version if it has air brakes. Depending upon what you want to put in that garage and how many of you there are going to be it's a great RV.

The V10 F53 CS axles were 9,000 and 17,500. The new diesel has 12,000/20,000. Also the diesel has a little over 1,000 more NCCC.

I don't have easy access to the 2021 CS brochure, so I dont know if it was available for that year with the new F53 chassis. The 2022 FL version brochure was written in 2021 so they might have hopped straight from the V10 to the FL M2.

Sorry I didn't remember all of the details but R. Wold you are bringing back my thoughts from 18+mo ago when they rolled these out which is when I formed the "no real change in NCCC" opinion. You are right the FL based RV itself does have about 1K more capacity than the old F53, but there is 1K less difference between the GCWR and the GVWR so it's about a wash. E.g., with only 3K difference in GVWR and GCWR towing a 5k jeep cuts the NCCC in half and makes them comparable for the weight ratings.

I'm still a fan of the 3927, I just want to make sure folks don't invest that kind of $ on a toy hauler and discover their toys don't all fit. There is a ton of space in that garage and folks need to recognize they will max out the weight far before the space is full.

The diesel version is going to be a better fit for someone who drives a lot; the OP said they plan to do 12k miles a year - I would lean toward the more capable FL chassis at that kind of milage. Also remember that before 2016 the F53 based chassis had a different transmission setup and the '16-20 owners were happier with how that platform performed.

fieldsleake, if you tell us what do you plan to tow and what toys you plan to bring we may be able to help target things to consider / homework for you to check on. I looked around before we bought the '15 and determined that there wasn't any other toy hauler MH out there I would even consider, and I still feel that way, the CS 3927 is by far the best of the bunch.
