Recently, my water levels got low while the water heater was on (using propane, not electricity) and black soot came out of the water heater external exhaust, along with a burning smell. Anyone know what might have burnt, and what I might need to check?
And low water will not make black smoke......That is something blocking the airflow in the burner tube and getting a real yellow flame.
I should clarify by burner tube I mean the curved tube just after the gas valve.....
Thanks everyone for the replies... I looked in the burner tube inlet and there were some cooked stinkbug remains. I removed them and blew some compressed air through the burner tube to clear it out. I then added some water and fired up the propane heat and the flame is in fact yellow/orange. I'll need to investigate the actual burner tube (thanks @TheLooks for that info).
At the time, I thought perhaps the water level being low may have been the cause, but I now know that wouldn't be the case. Thanks again everyone... I'll report back on this thread once I can troubleshoot more this week.
Ok, so today I learned how to adjust my water heater's oxygen amount! I slid the metal sleeve a bit to allow more oxygen in, and it now has more blue in the flame. My follow-up question on this... other than the metal sleeve sliding during transportation, is there anything else that might cause the flame to change to a more orange/yellow color? I cleared out any possible debris in there with compressed air. Could there be other issues at play that I should inspect?
