FAA finally sets rules for piloting small drones

All drones weighing over a quarter kilogram will need Remote ID transmitters.

I saw this and was a little surprised that ADSB would not suffice to meet the requirements, at least for an interim. I haven’t seen anything that is available now that meets the Remote ID transmitter requirement but have to admit I’m a little behind on the subject.

I had no doubt they would come out with something to track the owner and also track the drone. I don't have a problem with drone avoidance and tracking, I was in a 757 that nearly had a mid-air, I've known friends to take theirs up to 1000ft for fun overriding the altitude cap, etc. They are going to continue to grow in numbers and they are going to be a growing hazard for manned aircraft. Privacy should remain, i.e. not be able to track the drone to the owner.

Why not? If somebody does something stupid with their drone, I would think it would be helpful to identify the owner.

Im not real happy with the new ruling but I do understand the importance of it. I can't tell you how many drones we have seen from the cockpit, usually at low altitudes on approaches into airports. It will be interesting to see if the transmitters will advise commercial aircraft.

consider that drones over 1/2 pound are good drug mules, and we complain that they have to be traceable?

Just remember, the bad guys won't have the trackers. Same applies to other things.

I'm not as worried about the "bad guys" as I am about the stupid ones. The bad guys will probably be careful staying away from controlled air space; the stupid ones will think how cool it would be go get some pictures of a 737 landing.

Well, if you cannot erect an antenna tower on your property higher than 100 ft. within a mike of an airport, it would be logical to prohibith the flying of drones within that area, as well.

Thanks for the video Neal. Very interesting information. It looks like I will have to buy one of the ID locators or my drone will literally be "unusable" in 32 months. It may be time to look into one of the sub 25g mini drones that are not required to have the locator.
