I'm planning some trips and trying to figure out my "security" options. The current state of affairs tells me a gun should be us traveling the country. Being an old Army guy, I have several guns, I rarely go shooting anymore but do practice to keep up my proficiency.

Is it a good idea to have a gun in the TT or truck going on overlanding adventures? Going to military installations, National and most likely State parks may have gun restrictions. To be compliant that means store the guns someplace before entering gun restricted areas, so where would you store them?

Do you carry? Where do you keep it? Where do you store the gun when going into restricted areas? Any "odd" state laws about guns in vehicles out there?

RVing to military installations, with guns, is a pain. You have to tell them, they will likely inspect them and/or run a background check on the serial numbers. Some may require you to take them to the armory. If I intent to use famcamps I prefer to leave guns at home. They are great destinations and having guns which the chance you'll need to use them are slim to none and there are other options. That's for another thread, which I'm sure is already here somewhere. Just know if you intend to go to military installations the guns will be a big pain.

Otherwise guns can add to the RV experience. I picked up a shotgun, did some skeet shooting, lots of clay survived. But it was something to do in a location that didn't have much to do. Going shooting at ranges can be fun too.

There are apps that can tell you rules by state regarding guns. I think one is called Legal Heat?

When we famcamp I rent a storage locker off base. Most of the storage places will tell you they don’t allow several things including firearms. Personally, I would rather chance they will check than chance that the MP will find out about guns. Like Neal said, trying to get them on base are very time consuming and a bit invasive.

Other than that most Parks have some kind of “forbidden” list. I just keep one within reach and concealed. IMHO.

I think the old saying is
“I’d rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6”

Time for some lessons @Neal.

Saw something similar at a range once.

They had the Benelli factory shooter doing demos. Threw a piece of driveway chalk, shot like six times seeing little puffs of chalk when it hit. Still had enough to write his name after. Quite amazing and way beyond anything I could ever do.

I always carry at least one firearm when traveling in the coach. Much like having a fire suppression system. Hope you don't need it, but good to know it's there if you do.

Good idea, getting a locker to store the weapon while visiting a military installation. All the posts I've been to require you to turn the guns over to the MPs, which is a time consuming hassle, but getting caught with a firearm on an Army post will get you locked up facing a felony.

I'd like to shoot some clays with my semi-auto 12 gauge, it's the Bull-pup style, 20 round magazine fed firing machine, slugs or shot, it's a fun shooter.

Anyone store a gun at a pawn shop or gun shop? Seems a few bucks for safekeeping would be a good idea, if they would hold it.

A Pawn shop might work but I doubt they would also accept ammunition. Although I’ve never tried.

I have an Enhanced Carry Permit and never leave home without being strapped. Having some form of protection now-a-days is just common sense. I'll just leave it at that.

Enhanced?

It's fairly new concept. Basically I can carry (open or concealed) in almost any place. There are a few restrictions, but not many.

Edit: I might add that this type of permit requires additional training and range time. They don't just hand them out to anyone.

Enhanced?
Some states now offer enhanced, does not mean all states recognize it. Bottom line do your homework and check state laws. I would not risk serious legal trouble by taking what is posted on social media.

Yes, be sure you know the laws (rules) of other states. Some states don't recognize regular carry permits.

A concealed carry permit is issued in the state you reside. They are usually issued by the CLO Chief law enforcement officer. This can be the Sheriff or Chief of police of your area., or even State Police.

Other states have to be reciprocal with your state to honor the permit. The problem is when traveling across state lines with handguns. Sometimes you are legal sometimes you are not. Remember you ABIDE by your state law. And guess what EVERY STATE is different on what. where, and how you can carry.

I live in PA, it is highly illegal for me to conceal or open carry in my surrounding states aka NJ, NY, OH, and so on. But Florida will honor our carry permits.

I guess I have the "ultimate" concealed carry as a retired LEO. However, that being said I still am aware that I can't stop at a military installation and run into the PX while armed.

As far as RVing with a firearm? I would never consider traveling without being armed in todays world. Of course if you are going to start carrying and it is something fairly new to you there are tons of safety considerations to think about also.

AND NOBODY is permitted to carry on an Indian Reservation.

Military bases have several different rules. Depends on the post commander. If you are going to use fam-camps here is a website that helps. https://www.militarycampgrounds.us/milcamps National Parks for the most part allow weapons; some are just not in buildings. Go to the National Park site you are going to visit and look at their web site. Same with State Parks. I have had to put mine in a gun safe in the camper, ammo separate, some places weapon has to be broken down. Some states just having it when passing thru is a crime. Best way is to go online and look up where you are going to be and what their rules are.
