I'm looking to possibly tow my trailer from Livermore to Sta Barbara for a long weekend trip. Worried about any "white knuckle" areas.

What route do you want to take? 101 or go over to the coast?

It's a reasonable drive whether you go down the 101 or the 5. You can either backtrack from Livermore to the 680 south to San Jose and pick up the 101 S but pick your departure time wisely as San Jose traffic can be gnarly. You can also go 5 South and pick up 41 West to the 46 West to the 101. 41 has some slight hills and it is a 2 lane road all the way to the 101 but very doable. On the 101 you may encounter some traffic at San Luis Obispo or Pismo Beach depending on the time of day. Either way is fine and whatever you are comfortable with. 5 will have more 18 wheelers on it than the 101 it seems.
