How much coffee grinds to use?

We started making espresso martinis - my nieces fault for giving us the recipe

Based on that we picked up one of these

Built in grinder is nice and a local source for freshly roasted beans.

I started grinding on the boat. Beans keep flavor longer than grinds

Of course I do not attempt to be as disciplined…but for coffee snobs, there is what seems commonly referred to as the “rule of 15”.

1) Coffee Beans, if inroasted and properly stored, are good for up to 15 months.

2) Coffee beans, whole and properly stored, are good for up to 15 days.

3) Coffee beans, once ground, are good for up to 15 minutes.

4) Coffee, once brewed, it at it’s peak for 15 seconds.


I do not possess the sensitivity that must be required to be that discerning about coffee.

Anyone out there a prescriber to the “Rule of 15”?

This isn't really on topic, but I'll share what I do. I have been cold-brewing for probably 40 years. Usually the term means drinking cold coffee, but I like it hot. I make a concentrated brew, pour a couple ounces in a cup, fill with water, and heat in a microwave. It's easy and with less work and mess. I have a cold-brew carafe with a stainless steel filter that holds coffee grounds while it "steeps". I make a liter by soaking like this from 6 to 24 hours. The result is a weeks worth of great coffee. It is slightly less caffeinated, and less bitter. I use all kinds of coffee but my favorite is a store brand ground coffee in a pound can. Amazon has lots of cold-brew carafes.
