The Space Shuttle Challenger exploded just after liftoff. I was in formation at VMI, broke formation and ran to the TV room. Was always my dream to be an astronaut.

Sitting in the desert at the USMC base in 29 Palms CA on a combined arms exercise. Heard about it through the grapevine. TVs were scarce but I eventually found one. Shouldn’t have happened.

I remember watching the launch from the beach here in florida,and can't believe how much time has past. Nasa used my friends photos to determine the cause of the accident.

I was an E-4 in the Navy on deployment to Atsugi, Japan.
We watched the news in the barracks. This was the third tragedy while on this particular deployment. We lost an aircraft (PR-111, an A-3 Skywarrior VIP transport) with most of my EP-3 flight crew onboard.
I also had a very good friend and squadron mate die in a motorcycle crash on Guam.
All of this in one month. It was a lot for a young man to weather...

I was service manager at a marina and we had a mentally challenged young boy working there painting boat bottoms. We saw the smokey Y shape in the sky and he said, "maybe the space shuttle blew up". We all thought he was crazy, that could never happen. Turned out he was right.
