Hi All,

i would like to get a 120VAC-powered safety heater, a unit that will maintain my RV at a constant temperature when it is unoccupied for extended periods of time. It should have the following characteristics:

1. Maintain digitally-set temperature down to 50 degrees F.
2. Retain temperature setting over power loss, and automatically resume operation when power is restored.
3. Operates continuously without user intervention.

I thought this would be easy, but no! Everything I have looked at fails in one way or another. Can’t set temp low enough, unit turns off after 15 hours of unattended operation, unit loses setting when power fails, unit doesn’t automatically restart when power is restored, etc.

I welcome your comments and suggestions. Thank you!

I have simple little heaters with a dial, not digital that will work as long as they are plugged in. My oil filled one will not. Biggest heater you can get is 1500 watts anyways, unless you go to a 220 vac device. How much space are you heating and how cold will it get?

It’s a smallish travel trailer, Surveyor 220RBS. 1500W is plenty. I have a great Pelosi is heater in there now, but it shuts off after 15 hours.

Get one of the old timers that have the dip switches you push in or out. Set it to turn the heater off every 14 hours. Then back on...

I doubt if you will find anything that has an adjustable setting. I just Googled " 110 V AC temperature activated switch" and discovered a few hits. I doubt if the digitally controlled would restart on it's own after a power loss but this non adjustable one might work. Just an FYI, I have two small electric heaters in my two wet bays that I set with just a dial to what temp I think will work. So far, we have winter camped quite often and have not had anything freeze on us. If you need a more precise temp you could stick a thermometer in the trailer and adjust the temp over time. For me, as long as it stays above freezing is all I need.

It isn’t digital - but have you considered plugging a simple heater into a Thermocube? We use the thermocubes to power heat blankets on our Lithium batteries and also use them with a small electric heater in the wet bay.

The cubes we have are set for 40F. Don’t recall if they have any different models for higher temp settings.

Simple and in the case of power outage they still work when the power comes back on.

I use an EZ Heat cube. On at 38F. Off at 50F. Frost King also makes one as well as other companies. Back when I lived in houses, I used to have one in the well pump houses and one in the chicken coops, operating heat lamps. When the interior temp hit 50F, it would turn off. When the interior dropped to 38F it would turn on. I've also used it on an electric space heater set inside my car.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I got a heater with a simple dial thermostat. I can’t set it accurately, but it’s close enough. Plus it’s guaranteed to resume operation after a power loss.
