Some thoughts on this over coffee this morning:
One must have one‘s adventures and you do a risk/benefit analysis and go forth and conquer, but there is nothing in Mexico that would make it worth the risk to take my coach there. I might go on a fishing trip next fall from the West coast south of Baja, but probably not.
But I’ve also been to Mexico several times, mainland and Baja, to many other third world countries all over the Caribean in my sailing years, and around the world in my travel photography phase (even traveling with armed commando type “escorts” in the Middle East and North Africa). So I’ve had enough of that. You may still want to see places like that.
And I’m also done with air travel and cruise ships for the most part, which is why I bought the coach. So other than a very few select places around the globe (Paris for instance), and a couple select cruises, international travel is pretty much a thing of the past for me as well. So that’s me.
If you do go my, advice would be to focus on good reliable insurance first and then look into a caravan thing if needed. A caravan alone wont shield you from the woes of highway travel in Mexico. I welcomed the searches of the Federales with them poking through my stuff with their HKs because that was better than the alternatives, but there were never enough of them around when traversing open country. And as far as service, parts and repairs go, well refer to
@Kannon.
A lot of RVers love driving to Mexico, have had no problems, and will highly recommend it, and under different circumstances I might as well. But for me there is plenty to see and do on this side of the border, and too much that can go wrong and ruin a vacation (or other pursuit) on that side.
