I think a lot of people choose 1/2 ton because it is a daily driver. 3/4 ton and diesel is a lot of truck to drive to work.
I had a car to drive daily and drove the truck when I wanted to. It worked great.

1/2 ton is great as long as you are willing to size the trailer accordingly.
