I think a lot of people choose 1/2 ton because it is a daily driver. 3/4 ton and diesel is a lot of truck to drive to work.
I had a car to drive daily and drove the truck when I wanted to. It worked great.

1/2 ton is great as long as you are willing to size the trailer accordingly.

Exactly. To my thinking this is the decision algorithm:

1. You already own a 1/2 ton truck and don't want to/can't afford to buy a 3/4 ton diesel.

The decision is simple: buy a trailer your truck can pull.

This is what I did. Having already owned a diesel and fully aware of the cost to drive, and knowing we did not want a huge trailer for just the two of us, I bought a 1/2 ton truck with all the towing options you can get.

2. You know what trailer you want, and you buy a truck to match it. This is by far the most expensive option, but one that many people do.

3. You already own a diesel puller, then you can buy any trailer you want.

With the price of trucks these days, and the cost of maintenance, it's a decision each person has to make that fits their budget and lifestyle.

My point with all this long winded bull is a diesel is not an automatic decision.

I'm happy with my diesel, even with a baby trailer.... just 2 of us and a dog so did not need a monster trailer even if i could pull bigger.

I'm tempted to go up to a one ton gas and either keep the trailer we have now that's an appropriate size for my half ton or look for something the same size that isn't an ultra light, if such a thing exists.
