Hi. Being British we need to set up an LLC before we can buy a truck & trailer in the US. We’d like to do this in Montana. We will need a full service, with mail forwarding, as well as a residential address. There are a few companies offering a similar service. If you have recent personal experience of this and can recommend a company, please can you let us know. Please can any feedback be specific on this issue only. Thank you

Seems like your requirements exceed a Montana LLC, Domicile?

Not sure of the legality of what you want to do. But I CAN tell you that the #1 attorney (Bennett) for the Montana LLC game ceased all LLC services for the obvious reasons.

This may not apply to an international resident, so I apologize if you’re already versed on what’s going on here in the states.

California is one such state who, only through rumors, is going after Montana plates on high profile vehicles; and I’m not referring to height.

And, before anyone starts Cali-bashing, pay attention to others. This week, I was just told by a friend who lives in Wyoming that the Jackson LE is pulling over EVERY RV with a Montana plate!

I hope these rumors are unfounded, but nonetheless, the legal path, as any CPA or personal attorney will advise, is extremely narrow if you live in states that take exception to tax advantages, when your vehicle is registered in another state, even if it is your part time domicile!

I have personally been targeted by one of the states I live in for Montana Plates. For me, it was a pretty easy ordeal and all handled roadside without the need to visit the local tax office or deal with the state.

The primary reason the state troopers are pulling over the MT plates is they are expecting to find an LLC, and then they will interrogate them.

I was driving a truck with the local state plates on it, pulling a 45Ft flatbed trailer with MT plates. I had the paperwork for the trailer showing it registered in my name, that matched my driver's license (not MT). That ended the inquiry.

Getting plates with an LLC name behind it will become an issue for drivers in states that charge a vehicle sales tax or registration fee annually.

The first requirement of getting a MT registration is to establish a domicile. This means that you either own or rent property in the state and pay utilities, property taxes, and have a bank & credit card for the address. Having those properties in an LLC is another legal way to own a vehicle in the same LLC but will be subject to more scrutiny.

When the plates are run and the name matches the driver's license, the inquiry ends immediately, and no further actions are taken roadside.

This here is solid gold!

Thanks. We will have the correct paperwork if we get pulled over. Our address will be in Montana and we will not be staying in any state for a long time.
Can anyone recommend a Montana LLC? We could choose an LLC in a different state, but Montana seems to be the best option.
