Alert Reminder: check your generator coolant level

This for some reason is one of the last things I think about and I remember from the balloon fiesta many found theirs low and Onan/Cummins was on site servicing everyone which was cool. Before departing this morning I checked mine as I run my gen often, especially driving in this heat (96F today) to keep house A/C's running and yep, it was low.

I have the ONAN 8K which takes the Fleetguard CC2825:

I just got back from boon docking at the Gun show for five days. The temp was in the 90's all five days. I ran the generator for almost 30 hrs.

I am taking the coach in for the PA State inspection. I had 120 hrs on the genny so I figured I would do an oil change. Checked the coolant, yep it was very low.

Like Neal said, when you run them hard in extreme heat, check your coolant.

I agree. Mine was low when I checked it about a month ago…. Not sure where it goes.

Well you sent me running to check mine and my Onan QG 5500 gas genny is air cooled. I'm sure I would have noticed it when doing maintenance but I had to check none the less.

The coolant should go into a coolant recovery bottle.



I have a coolant recovery bottle on my 37 year Onan Generator. Maybe the coolant recovery lines on your newer rigs in not bringing the cooled off antifreeze back in. because the recovery line is not airtight. The coolant recovery cap could be leaking also.



If you do not have a coolant recovery bottle, you should add the recovery bottle and a new coolant recovery cap. This keeps AIR out of the system.



When you remove the coolant recovery cap the radiator should be totally full with no place for air.
