I have noticed a large number of RV owners just have to put the awning(s) out regardless of conditions. I have seen way to many ripped off by hi winds. I am at the Chautauqua Lake KOA Holiday, 5652 Thum Rd, Dewittville, NY this week and nearly every day they have had small craft wind warnings in effect. Yet I saw nearly every camper had their awnings out. They had about 25 come in Friday same thing.
What do you think?

I think once they have to pay for a replacement a time or two they might learn a lesson. ;)

I actually rarely put mine out and when I do it's either to exercise it or make sure it's dry, occasionally for shade.

Extend the awning in coastal S.Texas and you'll find it about 5 miles inland where it got hung up on a mesquite tree.

I rarely use mine and any wind or any time I am leaving the rv, I retract it. I watched as folks left in high winds, their awning flapping. Within 10 minutes it was destroyed and they came back 2 hours later and could not figure out why

When we had our class C, at one campsite, a crazy wind came up on a relatively calm day and took our canopy that was over the motorcycles, lifted it over 30' in the air and deposited the twisted remains behind the camper. It also ripped the pull out awning from the mounts on the side of the RV and folded it over the top punching holes in the rubber roof. In 20 seconds it was over and back to calm breeze again. I've seen countless awnings ripped off during our travels and won't deploy our awnings unless it's very calm, and I'm outside to monitor them. I never leave them out if leaving the coach. Those Girard awnings don't hold up well in wind.

Our awning is motorized and has the Somfy controller on it - which has a wind bounce sensor.
It retracts automatically when it senses wind.
Anything more than 5-6 mph and it retracts - which means the awning is only useful is precious few places.
Over 5+ years it has probably been deployed for less than a few hours a year.
We had a rare calm day recently, got the annual few hours of deploy time in a single sitting. Think I may buy a lottery ticket now

The pace at which the Gerard awnings auto retract is much too slow to avoid wind damage. I won't rely on it.
