And that would be a quick "see ya later" in my book.I saw something I liked on Facebook Marketplace.
Before I got into rig details, I thought it would be a good idea to ask about their sales process. Here's my question and the answer I got:View attachment 29040
Pretty straight forward - everything I was told not to do when buying.
Exactly right. A couple weeks ago I saw a 2014 Freelander at PPL that looked in pretty good shape asking $32,000k. I thought to myself "that's in good negotiating range if everything checked out." A few days later I checked it out with moisture meter in hand. That cabover registered 100% moisture in most areas I asked them what would it cost to repair. They said between $2k and $10k, they couldn't know for sure without tearing it apart. I walked. When I was shopping for my sons 5th wheel his price range dictated that i would be dealing with these type of lots.
I ended up at PPL RV, which is a reputable (sort of) dealer with many consignment trailers.
The unit I found was priced at $30k but after I did my own inspection I found roof damage, broken appliances, slide motor that was hanging loose and inoperative water heater.
I made an offer of $12k and they balked. They offered 23k and I thanked them and walked out with son and daughter in law in tow. I started to explain that we would be hearing back with 24hrs when the salesperson came running out and said that his manager talked to the consignee and they agreed to $17k. I thanked him for the time but said $15k is bottom line. He asked us to wait inside while he conferred but I told him we’d wait outside as i had to arrange another unit to go see and we’d give 5 minutes.
They accepted the $15k, and I did all the repairs for $3k. They have lived in it for over a year and it’s easily paid for itself.
Reason for the story is the next level of buying is dealing with these edge dealerships in a way that allows you to come out a winner can work, but you must know what your getting into and be very confident with your ability to find the issues. The dealer knows the problems and they are often into these units much less than expected.
The reason for cash only is they do not want to meet the banking requirements for inspection as it will expose what they are hiding.
I take that challenge willingly, but it is truly buyer beware and for most….RUN!
