Alberta Parks:
Non-refundable $12 reservation fee per reservation plus full pre-payment of camping fees
Changes to campsite reservations are $10/change; no charge for name/address changes.

YMMV but I've found that most private campgrounds in Alberta don't charge a fee and don't ask you to prepay either. These are usually the campgrounds that have no problem filling in if you don't show up.
On the other hand, the RV park we like to visit is about $20 a night more than a campground in a national park in the mountains. Both full hookups.

I'd always take the scenery hands down every time but I guess some people feel that a playground and convenience store are worth the extra cost?

Sadly, if you don't show up the site stays empty unless the camp host can get an authorization from the folks that reserved it. Just about every day we had one or two. People reserve so far in advance they forget. Most times they let us rent it out but the odd one said no. If you need a spot and don't have an alternative, stop by and ask if there had been a cancelation. Further, we used to hold two large sites back incase a person reserved a 20 foot site but had a 30 foot unit. After 8:00 PM, or if the park was already full, we used to let them go for just the site fee. We could not included the reservation fee because the web site didn't show one for those sites. I guess that would be a "something good" about a campground when they try hard to accommodate people who show up needing a site. I've heard good stories about some of these campgrounds that go above and beyond to make a stay happen for people in need.

I guess my pet peeve is things that should be obvious. Trash left behind dogs that bark nonstop and people that don't take care of what their kids are doing and dirty showers/bathrooms.
And how many of those have I broken.... At one time or another all.

New big dog on his first trip out. Sorry madam I did not know he would charge glad we had a good cable on his collar.
Kids who sneak out of their tent early. Their first night in their own tent. BIG talk about not safe and not OKAY.
Super tired and forgot to do my own bathroom scrub out. I usually do clean up after myself but that time I forgot until the next morning so sorry about that.
Forgot to put the bag of trash in the truck for the dumpster on the way out. I really hope the racoons did not get into that again sorry about that I don't usually make messes like that, usually leave things clean.
Go for a walk and hear the kid's music on the return walk from 4 - 5 campsites away. They did get a lesson in respecting things, and they lost their music for the WHOLE DAY.
I know I have also reserved a campsite for peak time and then did not show up. Sometimes poop happens and things go sideways. Really would have preferred to camp but....

Sometimes things just happen sorry to all those folks we bugged but also know we worked at fixing things for the next time out. Oh yea and to all those folks who had to listen to yet another round of 100 bottles of beer on the wall all those years back when it was me singing with all my sibs and cousins....I'm so sorry.
