Random question. I know many of you have a water softener…I have a On-the-Go double and it works well, but with us traveling less, I have wondered if it is bad for it to sit unused (empty or filled with water) and could germs/bacteria build up in there? Or does the salt help prevent that?

At one point I went about 2 years without using it and when I went to take it on a trip, I was concerned about it so I called the company and they recommended running Sani System through it, which I did. More recently, to hopefully head off running the Sani System solution, I have been running water through it at least every other week if we are not traveling. This keeps fresh water in it (that has some chlorine from our tap water) to hopefully keep it clean.

The question (finally) is, what do you guys do, if anything, to keep your water softener fresh between trips?

I do like you do and run water through it every couple of weeks and so far I seems to do the trick. I will be curious to hear what other are are doing.

I have the Pro Aqua and always try to back flush it when we return from a trip.
Until the next trip I do just like you guys and run some water through it every couple of weeks.
Before winter storage back flush and then completely empty the tank and store it in my basement.
Next season I use the sani system, regen, and off we go.
