Sounds like it was for the Xite system at least.

With the amount of stuff in the dash, guessing it was easier than running a dedicated one (just my guess though).

Yes!!!
Sharing one location grounding reduced noise between electronic devices.

If this is a problem for you, it's time to repair/clean the connections, not bypass a proven very sound practice, used in the industry from the 70's.
