His trailer was not balanced, putting to much load on the hitch and taking weight off the front wheels of the tow vehicle. As to the other questions of why......probably didn't want to be behind a semi in those conditions pelting him with debris and getting buffeted around by his wake. But he should have stayed out in the fast lane and let his camper slow him down by tapping the trailer brakes and easing back over well beyond the semi. Only takes one mistake. I have driven in much worse conditions many many times. Not with a camper behind me however....lol.
 
Oh yeah, you can totally tell that that trailer was not hooked up right and I think maybe even too heavy for that POS Toyota that was pulling it.

new trailer and new truck? newbie pulling a big trailer on icy roads?
maybe a new trailer, older Tundra truck.

trailer was well oversized/weight for the truck pulling it, and there didn't appear to be any type of weigh distribution hitch.

the tongue weight was well over what the truck was designed for, the rear of the truck was squatted pretty bad. and the trailer was far from level, the rear wheels of the trailer and the front wheels of the truck were lifted.

the Semi, was doing 55, slowed to 48 and the truck/trailer passed him at a good clip, my estimate would be 70+, then tried to change lanes in front of the semi on icy road, with marginal room between them, trailer swayed, spun the truck, jack knifed, and the semi plowed through the trailer like a hot knife through butter.

I am in the US and also see this black screen. Using mobile device.
 
Doing 60+ on snowy icy roads is always smart. Not one bit of sympathy for this asshat.
 
If you grow up in it you view it differently. Not to say he was right. But we drove like it was bare tar most of the time.

I grew up in the mountains of Alberta. If you didn't learn to drive on snow you walked for 6 months of the year. Driving on snow, for some of us, is not much different than pavement (depending on temp and type of snow).

Looked like the photo vehicle WAS NOT PAYING ATTENTION!! As soon as that trainer started swaying max braking!!! He only slowed from 55 to 45 before impact. Slow reaction time if you ask me! The roads look slushy but pretty clean. Hope he has insurance!!
 
I had some moron pass me in Wyoming, he had to be doing 85 and almost took off my mirror with his trailer swaying. About 45 minutes later, I came upon him. He wrecked and rolled, his kids bikes were strewn across the road way.

He was driving reasonably. If he had reacted with panic, he would have been off in the grass also.

What you were watching was the natural selection cycle spoken of in Darwin's works!
 
I try to tell people that have never driven in conditions like that, no sudden moves, period. Don't over accelerate, don't jam on the brakes, don't swerve. All of those actions will most assuredly get you an adverse reaction.
 
If you look at the timing, it took 6 seconds to slow 10mph. That is a long time to react. I'm a commercial pilot and I can tell you that 6 seconds is forever!! Sorry, guess we are just agreeing to disagree!
