Yeah, I work in the Gardena area and several of the streets are just lined with very old RVs. Most of them are broken and are not drivable, flat tires, damaged side bodies, etc..

A lot of them leave their drain pipes open and they drain their black and gray tanks into the sewer.

Living in an RV in Los Angeles county has always been illegal unless it’s parked on private property property and it needs to be secluded behind a gate, if it’s an open driveway with no gate then it’s illegal to use an RV as housing.

I’m living in mine in a relatives “driveway“ and we put up a 9 foot gate at the end of the driveway 1 foot back from the setback so that the driveway technically becomes the backyard and it’s legal at that point as long as the RV is not permanently attached to the house water, electric, or sewage lines.

That crap was just starting to really get going when I left LA and moved back to NYC. It was bad enough going down to Venice beach and finding street parking, when that started it was always parking lot only.

When they do that it runs into the storm drains, not the sewer, constituting a bio-hazard and making an extremely unsanitary condition; essentially the creeks and rivers become an open sewer no different than what is found in many third world countries. In a city with real management it would never be allowed to happen.

I am aware, in this area it runs to the Rio-Hondo and/or Los Angeles River beds which are lined end to end with homeless living on the bike paths. Both Rivers dump into the Long Beach and LA/San Pedro Harbors which in turn dump to the ocean.

The area has been in "hazardous water" status for several years, fishing/swimming/water and jet skiing is not allowed due to the massive amounts of waste being dumped.

Here again, people are un uninformed to some extent. It was not until I was far into adulthood that I knew that what we called the sewer was just a storm drain.

true, "sewers" are piped from buildings (houses/offices, etc.) the black and grey water from the sink/toilets, all of that is piped through the public sewer system to the wastewater treatment centers.

the "gutters" are nothing more than storm drains that drain to the ocean.

Most people are ignorant to the difference. and most homeless wouldn't care even if they knew the difference. paying to dump their tanks is likely something they cannot afford, in addition as I said many of these homeless RV encampments are non-functional RV's.

the ones around here have flat tires, are damaged, or in some cases burnt out and held together with tarps and plywood.

Where I worked that would be a Haz-Mat incident. I guess they’ve given up.

Well, you could do it like they did up in nowhere Maine and put the storm drains into the sewer treatment facility....."point source" pollution was running rampant in the far reaches where no one lives. You can guess what happens when it rains a whole bunch.....

Back in the 90's I had a project in Marina Del Rey and it included massive concrete footings. When we poured, it one drop of "concrete contaminant" escapes our barriers, we risked having the jobsite shut down. Meanwhile the literal crap that they are putting in the sewers has been going on about ten years now.

Of course your right!

Every year, for several years in a 14 day stay area in the Prescott forest. The LOWs, and RTs would have an annual cleanup to help keep the location open. However big business wanted the public lands for profit.
The forest rangers started harassing the LOWs, and RTs, and told a few of them to quit their efforts.
One year later signs went up warning that if the forest wasn't taken care of they would close the area to the public.

The next year all camping was outlawed to the west of i-17 on the 260 dew to misuse! Then the development started.

Now The only reason there was a problem in LA was because the law was told not to do their job. It was the job of the police to make the people move on, but the powers that be have their eyes on a larger pot of fiat!!!

Self policing won't fix it, only removing the criminals, that want to fleece the public, can fix the problem.

Sorry for the rant, but it is past time to quit being sheep, and figure out what they are leading you to!!!

Yes there are far reaching implications. Not just for boondockers, but for everyone that buys a new RV, as the market will shrink as the places where they can be used becomes more limited!!!

I wonder how folks would feel if these rvs were parked in front of their house? The stench of the sewer dumping, these folks defecating in front yards, these pieces of human crap walking up to your house and stealing the water that you are paying for.
Its always priceless to think that the city is trying to punish legitimate rv owners. But if they do not make rules, someone, some church, some homeowner will think he/she has the right to rent his driveway and front yard, yes let them park on their front yard. Is that what you want to live next to?
I recently saw a story where a homeowner with a large property, rented out his yard just for this reason. How would you like 40 rvs in the yard next door to your dream home? The yard was covered in rvs that were literally 3' apart on all sides.
Someone who worked hard to buy a nice home, raise a family, have a nice yard to keep their personal investment up, pays property taxes (something these rv dwellers do not do) needs to put up with this? The drug use, the booze bottles, the garbage and trash in their front yard.
You know what folks who think there should be no laws to stop this are called, NIMBYS. The city did not create this problem, society and the folks who think its ok, except in their front yard.
I owned four rvs over the years that I lived in LA. But I lived by the rules and respected other peoples property

You actually believe what you just said? Amazing! Your view of finding an LA industrial area nice house, must be very low standard.

Kickbacks? That's a strong accusation where there is really no possibility for them. I find it priceless when someone who does not live in LA knows it all.
Someone who thinks that whether they are in a residential or industrial area that their sewage goes to different places. How somehow their sewage is magically clean and sanitary because they are in an industrial area. How if its in an industrial area it does not have an effect on the economy or anything else. How its ok in an industrial area. Well its not. It has an effect of businesses, on clients, on employees, on people trying to use the roads for what they were meant for. It has an effect on kids trying to walk to school.
Mostly, I get a kick out of someone who does not live in LA and thinks this is not occuring on residential streets. Does this look like an industrial street?

Difference is that I lived there for 26 years and only left the last few years. Still have friends and family that I visit. I also just sold a house there last year so there is no pot/kettle.
Did not buy enough land? LA is not hillbillies living out in the sticks where you can buy acres of land. Its a city and if you live in a city, you abide by the laws of that city, you live with a common courtesy and decency to your neighbor. Its not a backwater meth lab town.
