In bike riding, the 'peloton' leaders, that's the long line of riders drafting behind the leaders will deliberately not increase the speed before beginning a short climb so as to rob the bigger guys of the momentum advantage.

Thats what big trucks do too..it helps climbing with loads
It's called driving, engine brake downhill, power pedal 3/4 way down for uphill
 
Driving with a load..you dont need a running start in a 400 hp car
