Texas to Idaho

my wife and I are planning a trip, next Spring to McCall Idaho. Will be pulling our 30' RV and have never been thru Colorado pulling a trailer. Curious if anyone from Texas has made this trip to Idaho, or surrounding area(thru Colorado(hwy 25), Wyoming(hwy 80, etc). Just not sure what to expect highway, or 'mountain' wise since I've never pulled an RV thru mountainous areas. Thanks Jeff

We've made essentially the same trip several times. Both I-25 and I-80 are excellent highways and are used by a lot of commercial traffic (trucks). You will encounter some long grades, but nothing to worry about if you have a proper tow vehicle. I would have no hesitation about your proposed route.

Cool, have traveled the Colorado,
Wyoming, Utah route quite a bit. I work for Oregon and travel out there a bit, plus in my Air Force days I was stationed at Hill AFB in Ogden. I you like, take a look at HWY 287 from Ft Collins to Laramie. Nice scenery.

Off the path a little is Bear Lake Idaho. It is a nice place and on the northern side they have hot springs.
Outside of Ogden is Antelope Island. That is were many of the old movies were shot with wild buffalo. You can also swim in the Great Salt lake there, but make sure you have no cuts or you will know it.

Just north off of Ogden off of I84 is Promontory Utah where they drove the golden spike where east met west during the railroad development. You will also pass Northrop
Grumman test facility where they tested the Space Shuttle engines before installation.

There is Kennecott Copper Mine, Utah that is south of Salt Lake City which is one of the largest open pit mines in the world. They have a visitors center and viewing area.

Just some things off the top of my head. Hope you have a good trip!

We like going thru Amarillo and Raton, NM to catch I-25. If you go this route I'd suggest going up to US 82 as soon as possible to avoid DFW, also take 87 out of Amarillo to Dumas then over to Dalhart.

I have a few friends who catch I-35 up to Salina, KS. then I-70 to get to I-25 and they say it's the best. When we go next time we're going to try this.

We live south of DFW, and travel this route often. We have found that going straight up 35W-North, and taking the toll road that begins near the 183 split all the way to 287-North is very easy, even in rush hour traffic. Keep in mind DFW traffic is nothing like it was Pre-Covid.

Historically we took the Raton pass route, but lately we have been wanting to avoid the Colorado springs/ Denver traffic. We stay on 287 N all the way to Limon, CO where it meets with I70, and then take the E-470 to get North of Denver. From there it is smooth sailing into Wyoming and I-80. I have done this 3 times this year so far, and have found the times faster than going thru all the city traffic. Also avoids any *potential* civil unrest.

I'm speaking of US 82 that runs from Texarkana to almost Wichita Falls along the TX OK border. Take 80 out of LV to Mineola and up 69 to about Sherman.

82 has about 1% of the traffic that DFW has.

You didnt state what time of spring your traveling through Wyoming often times spring starts in May or even June or July.

Things to be well aware of when making your last minute departure is upcoming storms and wind which I’m sure doesn’t need to be stated but one thing to really be aware of on highway 80 as you Cross Wyoming is extremely high wind gusts Theres quite a bit of this area that boasts some of the highest average wind speed and gusts in the US and often they are not predicted or talked about that much.

I lived right next to a truck stop in Laramie and saw the results of the wind in this area often its just something to be extra aware of. Theres lots of great weather apps but the wind app would be something I would watch when traveling here. One trip from Casper to Salt Lake pulling a trailer with a car on it I hit a head wind that kept me from going over 50 MPH Literally didnt have enough HP to go faster and my fuel mileage dropped to about 4 MPG .
