Arizona to South Carolina in August/September

Call me crazy, but.... we are headed to South Carolina mid August. Our goal is to cruise along the Gulf Coast, through New Orleans and from there eventually make our way to Darlington, SC. Our routes and timeline is somewhat flexible, but I would love to hear any tips, thoughts, campgrounds or boon docking sites anyone can recommend. Is there somewhere we shouldn't miss? thank you so much!
