I have spent zero time in the Northeast. We are looking to correct that next summer.

We will be spending July and Aug somewhere up there. The only thing I have nailed down is two weeks in Bar Harbor Maine the first couple of weeks of Aug.

Other than that, nada. Help a poor southerner out and give me some suggestions for must-see places. The only guideposts I can give you is we have no interest in big cities.

Domo.

Book a week or so at Atlantic Oaks on Cape Cod. Not fancy but clean and in what we feel is closest to the best of the Cape

I plan on that at some point also. Have had that on my radar a few times but circumstances made me cancel

I am from the far reaches of Maine, spent over a month there this summer. It is hard for a native to tell you what to see. I took a couple of Southern friends up and showed them my area. That was easy. I can say you picked the right time to go. Late July and August are "generally" the very best time to be there.
If you decide to venture further then Bar Harbor, I am from the far eastern point, having been born in Lubec, the eastern most town in the US. Quoddy Head light house is a destination as is Roosevelt park on Campobello Island. That is Canada so be prepared for a border crossing. Check out Herring Cove near the golf course while on the island. Back towards Cutler on R191, there are hiking trails, some moderate, and some not, but the views are epic. In Cutler there is a boat tour to Machias Seal Island and some Lobster tours that are shorter. The Seal island tours sell out for the summer in advance. Not sure what the name of that tour is but a friend of mine runs it after the owner died in a plane crash in SC a few years ago. Jeremy Cates runs a lobster tour. The lighthouse on the island at the entrance to the harbor is available for rent. Once again, epic views. There is another hiking trail on the other side of that harbor that is easy, somewhat long, but worth the trip if the fog is not in.
Now the bad news. Getting a place to stay in a camper in that region is daunting. It is NOT Bar Harbor. Covid killed many restaurant's and the ones that are open limit their hours and service. Helens in Machias along with Mason's are open most days, The Anchor, a bar pool place, another friend, has good food and serves a great breakfast on weekends only. There are a couple of places in Lubec. Eastport is a good way further on but has a trendy downtown they say due to outsiders moving in and trying build it up. I have not been there in years. There are whale tours and fishing tours out of Lubec and Eastport. There may be more campgrounds up around Eastport and beyond and Cobscook Bay state park has campsites, closer to the Lubec turn off RT 1. If I think of more things, I will pop back in.....
