Auto Start/Stop on New Vehicles.

Anyone that has a new vehicle may have that annoying auto start stop function. I understand it’s not a mandatory thing, but the EPA provides incentives if the manufacturer to put them on the vehicles. My 2024 Colorado has it and you cannot permanently shut it off. If you want it off you have to select it every time you start your vehicle. There is some controversy on how it could hurt the engine or starter, but that does not bother me as much as how it could cause an accident. This happened to me twice.

Just started the truck after shopping at a store getting ready to pull out of the parking lot onto a busy street. Unknown to me the engine did the auto stop. I didn’t feel it and didn’t hear it either “tinnitus”. I had to pull out quickly to blend into traffic. I went from brake to accelerator very quickly and too quickly for it to auto start. The delay almost caused an accident, but that’s not all. When it did start the truck jumped into traffic and all the instrument screens shutdown then came back on. Then warns of brake failure which in fact the power assist and steering assist shutdown. I had to pull off the road, put the truck in park, shut down the truck and wait a few seconds to restart. Everything went pack to normal.

I had enough of the and searched online and found an override system that prevents the Auto Stop. What this one does is it tells the auto start stop system that the battery is not fully charged thus preventing it from shutting down. This does not affect the actual charging system. It took about 5 min to install. I had it on for several days and love it. I even talked to the owner of the company. Nice guy and answered all my questions.

I heard the EPA is taking the incentive away. That will probably do it.

very unpopular feature that even if the incentives didn't go away the dealers and manufacturers were getting a lot of complaints. Forces a more expensive or second battery and early starter wear on customers for no real benefit. Phasing it out will be a good thing but doesn't help people who already own cars that have it. One thing you can do to prevent it from shutting off the engine is to use very light brake pedal pressure, that will usually prevent it from operating.

I wouldn't leave a live positive battery cable loose anywhere, might be better to take the negative off.

The tests lately show that the shutoff feature does nothing to cut down on emissions. Just another green idea that failed. I usually remember to shut mine off right after my first stop.
