Anyone that has a new vehicle may have that annoying auto start stop function. I understand it’s not a mandatory thing, but the EPA provides incentives if the manufacturer to put them on the vehicles. My 2024 Colorado has it and you cannot permanently shut it off. If you want it off you have to select it every time you start your vehicle. There is some controversy on how it could hurt the engine or starter, but that does not bother me as much as how it could cause an accident. This happened to me twice.

Just started the truck after shopping at a store getting ready to pull out of the parking lot onto a busy street. Unknown to me the engine did the auto stop. I didn’t feel it and didn’t hear it either “tinnitus”. I had to pull out quickly to blend into traffic. I went from brake to accelerator very quickly and too quickly for it to auto start. The delay almost caused an accident, but that’s not all. When it did start the truck jumped into traffic and all the instrument screens shutdown then came back on. Then warns of brake failure which in fact the power assist and steering assist shutdown. I had to pull off the road, put the truck in park, shut down the truck and wait a few seconds to restart. Everything went pack to normal.

I had enough of the and searched online and found an override system that prevents the Auto Stop. What this one does is it tells the auto start stop system that the battery is not fully charged thus preventing it from shutting down. This does not affect the actual charging system. It took about 5 min to install. I had it on for several days and love it. I even talked to the owner of the company. Nice guy and answered all my questions.

My jeep has 2 batteries, one for the auto start, I disconnected the positive cable, no more auto start, I read they are stopping installing them, they don't do any good

I heard the EPA is taking the incentive away. That will probably do it.

very unpopular feature that even if the incentives didn't go away the dealers and manufacturers were getting a lot of complaints. Forces a more expensive or second battery and early starter wear on customers for no real benefit. Phasing it out will be a good thing but doesn't help people who already own cars that have it. One thing you can do to prevent it from shutting off the engine is to use very light brake pedal pressure, that will usually prevent it from operating.

I wouldn't leave a live positive battery cable loose anywhere, might be better to take the negative off.

Its not loose, rubber boot and black tape

The tests lately show that the shutoff feature does nothing to cut down on emissions. Just another green idea that failed. I usually remember to shut mine off right after my first stop.

I think this part is a typical GM problem, regardless of whether you have the ASS system or not.

For the jeep I have a tazer. For the Kia I have another product.

The rest of my vehicles didn’t include the option.

Another vote for the Tazer. Have it in both Jeeps.

I have had my Blazer since 2020 and it has the feature. I turn it off when in stop and go traffic if it bothers me, but its never caused me a delay when entering traffic. I just wait for the traffic open up and go. If there was a delay longer than a split second either there is an issue with the vehicle or if not, it might have not been the right time to enter traffic.
Its still under warranty so talk to the dealer.

Once I deactivated the system or manually turned it off it never happened again.

I’ll be talking to the dealer, but an engine takes time to start. I know I did not give it that time mainly because I did not know the engine was off as I stated above.

We just push the button to turn the feature off as part of starting our 22 Cherokee Trailhawk.

When in a lot of traffic that is sitting (accident or whatever) I will turn it back on to let the ESS do its thing.

If it is on and we are in an area where crossing lanes may need to be done quickly I check that it is off.

Don’t have any idea about the new engines etc but back in the “old days” if you were sitting for more than about 30 sec it used less gas than restarting. No need to show the math etc - just a rumor and rule of thumb from a long time ago 😎

Don’t think it makes any difference being on though.

My manual transmission Wrangler does not have auto stop/start but my Bronco and Trailhawk do. I use Forscan and J-scan software to turn it off.... permanently. The software does many other mods so well worth the $20 license and a good quality OBD II scanner. The software does not void any warranty as the features can be turned on again.

In my Genesis GV80, there is a button that turns the ASS off.
I use a plastic bread loaf 'clip' to jam under the button to keep it deactivated all the time. Most all Genesis owners, on our forum, do also.
Totally forget I even have that 'feature' now.

That was the fix I had done with my Telluride until I bought the electronic gizmo for $99 that accomplishes the same task.

Disconnected battery was free
