Hi all,
We are close to buying a Class A from a private seller in IL. We live in Wis. . My financing bank said that I should leave the Sellers tags on the motorhome. And that the title transfer process could take 8 weeks. Can someone share your experience? Thank you,.
 
If the seller will agree to that, go for it. Perhaps make it a condition of the sale.
However, there may be provisions in IL. which discourage or prohibit this practice. Vehicle titling & registration laws vary from state to state, I would check with both IL. & Wis. to determine alternatives in the event the seller will not go for this.
And yes, the title transfer process could really take that long, or longer. A lot of variables involved with title transfers on vehicles, especially if the seller does not have a clear title. With COVID as an excuse, both the financial institutions & the respective Depts. of Motor Vehicles will use that as a reason to justify processing delays.
Not trying to rain on your parade, just trying to be realistic based my experience on buying & selling vehicles privately.

Well just bought in Florida. We drove back home (Az and CA) with their plates,registered the RV and sent their plates back after receiving temp tags. They say 8 weeks but got them in 4.
 
Most states will issue a temporary title and transit permit allowing you to take the coach back to your home state for permanent titling. The cost is usually reasonable and the duration of the temporary transit permit/title can range from 3-4 days to a couple of months. We have used that procedure twice when we bought coaches in Oregon and Colorado. It worked well both times. Might be worth looking into.

Thank you all for your helpful feedback and information. BTW - the Seller agreed to leave his tags on the RV. And we'll return them later. Next we'll inquire with the states DMV's. Have a good drive!
 
Any time I have done that I was able to get a temporary tag from that person's state DMV then register it in my home state.
 
Obviously this is an old thread and the issue solved long ago. I was not on this forum back in Feb. My company works with private deals all the time. Most often across state lines. There are a few things to have along that can help the process.
You should have a signed Bill of Sale between buyer and seller.
Buyer should have sellers old ownership papers (title signed off and registration card).
Buyer should have insurance binder showing buyer, unit info and lien holder if there is one.
Just my opinion but I would not leave a plate on for someone to use. With all the above docs, there should be enough to get home.
If there is a lien in place, that should have been handled long ago. Have the seller get the payoff on a letterhead and handle any payoff with a wire. Do not give money to a buyer with a lien. As a buyer, don't expect your lender to do any work to help in this. You could even find that some small CUs will not lend for out of state units because of the clear title and lien issue.

We bought one a couple of months ago in Florida, we live in NC. We had the title, bill of sale, and insurance policy number with us. My insurance agent said that should be enough to get us home. We didn't get stopped, not sure what would have happened if we did.
