Regardless the DEF debate, I don't have a dog in that hunt, but this is for sure, NO2 isn't a relatively harmless and natural atmospheric gas.I could never understand how anyone could come up with such an emission system that, in the name of lowering the concentration of a relatively harmless and natural atmospheric gas (NO2), destroys engine efficiency such that millions of gallons of extra fuel have to be needlessly burned each year. I hope the new EPA gets rid of these NO2 standards. They have no impact on global NO2 levels and are only useful in a handful of situations that can be dealt with locally.
Beg to differ. NO2 is a vital part of the nitrogen cycle that fertilizes plant growth. While farmers spend billions putting nitrogen into their plants, nature does it through the nitrogen cycle. Most atmospheric NO2 is actually generated from lightning strikes, not diesel engines. Its concentration is measured in single digit parts per billion. It is completely harmless in those concentrations. It is normally washed out of the atmosphere during rainstorms. In some areas though, like Los Angeles, for example, or in the vicinity of coal fired power plants, it can build up to undesirable concentrations of 50 ppb, but these situations can be dealt with locally.Regardless the DEF debate, I don't have a dog in that hunt, but this is for sure, NO2 isn't a relatively harmless and natural atmospheric gas.
