A few years ago I started tossing the lug keys for that very reason.

If they want the wheels the locking lugs is only going to slow them down a minute ir two.
 
I was going to post that they obviously were able to break mine off. As you say it just slows them down but for me it could cause a tow instead of a spare tire install when needed. They’re gone now. Never again.
 
If I had a flat tire repair kit this would have been easier. So yes, I'm getting one!

I keep a jump starter in the back of my toad when traveling which has an air pump so this could have worked.

A little heads up. The metal cords in tires are tuff!. I use a cordless drill with a drill bit about the size of the reamer. Makes life MUCH easier when installing the plug.
