Many people have been told to watch their salt intake! I personally use salt the way I did years ago, but an old wife's tail was brought to my mind recently, so online I went. Why do chefs put salt in water? The practice would make those that need to watch salt intake stop eating out, right?

When I did my search, a few things came to mind in what I read.

No one cooks in sea water? Well yes they do! Items that don't absorb the water will not take up much if any of the salt, so cruisers with limited supplies of water will use salt water for some cooking.

The other thing, a little more technical. The old wife's tail is that water, with salt added, will make water boil faster!!!!(NOT). However what I found in my study was the temperature water boils at is slightly higher, making things cook slightly faster, but apparently that isn't why chefs add the salt.

GOT a salt issue? You may need to give up fancy eateries!!!

I have laughed at reducing salt for 61 years, but I have had 2 kidney stones in 2 years.....so I am reducing salt at 63. I always knew it raised the boiling temp? It is put in all processed foods much like sugar/high fructose corn syrup. There is no real solution. It is prohibitively hard and expensive to eat naturally. I already eat venison and fish from the N Atlantic and veggies grilled in olive oil all summer, and....crap I am still getting old....lol.

The absolute best way to reduce one’s salt, fat, and sugar intake is to avoid eating at any, ANY restaurant. Prepare your own food, avoiding processed foods and you will likely be surprised how much better you feel.

Just throw it over your shoulder (either one) - it will reduce your intake and improve your luck.

You mean eat lettuce and kale and drink lots of water. Occasionally treat your self to a carrot and an avocado. The paleo diet maybe? I think I would prefer the Carnivore diet....
So I wonder! How many people pop there vitamin/mineral pills daily, not thinking they are ingesting salts. One year ago I read the truth about processed foods. Previously I watched cooking contest series on the boob tube. In amazement I watched how they took originally healthy ingredients and made garbage out of them.

Today I read labels, buy organic, and don't have a diet! I no longer eat beef. Never have eaten pig in my adult life, but am not vegetarian either. Exclusion is not the answer, rather well rounded makes you well, "well" !!!

I feel your pain! The best part is we are still getting old right? Have a Great Day!

We don't have salt or sugar in the pantry. If/when we buy any ready to eat processed foods, we look at the sodium and sugar content. If either is too high, we don't buy. If an ingredient name is difficult to enunciate, we don't buy. Our grocery shopping mantra is fresh is best.

So I like my sweets. Did you know raw unfiltered honey one spoonful is all that is needed to sustain life, not to mention good for you!!!
