My wife and I are looking at used class C motorhome. We plan on full-time and living in the rv doing workamping olong the way. Question, do we really need a slide-out. Looking at rigs between 27 and no bigger than 30 ft. Trying to decide if the extra room is worth the upkeep and potential problems? Not to mention the extra weight. Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks
Capt Jack

The extra room is appreciated...but no, you don't really NEED it. Spend a bit of time in both layouts and you'll be able to decide. To me, it's more important to make sure that IF you get a slide out, that you can operate inside (access EVERYTHING) with the slide in. It baffles me that some designers arrange things inside that can only be accessed with the slide out (i.e., refrigerator, bathrooms, etc.). In my limited experience, slide out problems are rare.

I’ll caveat my reply by stating I have never owned a class c, but was looking into them when we first began our journeys a dozen years ago.

I recommend looking closely at the difference in cargo carrying capacity between slide and non-slide rigs. I think that would be important for someone looking to live full time in one. The extra living space with a slide is always welcome, but it’s a nice-to-have whereas the ability to carry what you need without overloading the unit is a necessity for safety reasons.

Best of luck to you!

I had a 30’ class C with no slides for about a year and we got along just fine on trips up to about two months. For full timing and/or working out of the coach, I’d say slides would be well worth the weight and maintenance. Spending that much time in the coach, you’ll use and appreciate every square inch of space.

I agree with Rich W. you will want every square inch - especially if you are living in it full-time!
I originally ordered a TT without the slide (due to being afraid of leakage) but after I compared it to another one the same size with a slide a cancelled my order and bought the one with the slide. We have sooo much more living space with the slide.
So far no issues with maintaining the slide and keeping it operative and leak free.
MY biggest advice is to put a 'slide-topper' on the slide to help prevent issues - that alone was worth the extra $500 I paid the dealer to install when I bought new.
