Does your state of registration require a "Special" license to operate an RV?
Personally I am surprised that not more states don't require a Special license to operate a large RV. Especially RVs with a truck chassis and Air Brakes. The weight and systems on these vehicles are foreign to most people. Additionally the safe operation require different considerations and practices that are far from a typical sedan or SUV.
As a chronic student of vehicle operating requirements and practices, every year I learn something important from each classroom I attend. This year I'll be attending the week long Spartan Coach class.

Here is a current list of state RV license requirements.

FYI-inaccurate info, not mentioned, Illinois requires a Class B Non-CDL license for operating vehicles over 26,000#

If you read the DMV rules closely I believe IL exempts RVs...

  • Recreational Vehicle Operators — Illinois waives CDL requirements for drivers of a recreational vehicle operated as family/personal conveyance for recreational purposes. This includes motor homes, travel trailers and other recreational vehicles. Recreational vehicles being operated in the furtherance of a commercial enterprise are NOT exempt (Ex: Teams with sponsorships, Individuals or groups participating in shows/festivals where business is being conducted and other similar activities).

if under 26,000# Over 26,000# requires a Non-CDL Class B, written test and drive test, I live in Illinois

Class B — Any single motor vehicle with a GCWR of 26,001 pounds or more or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds. Also allows for operation of Class C and D vehicles

EDIT to include:
He has omitted Illinois under:

NY requires a written an road test for R endorsement over 26,000 pounds. Many states require some sort of extra credentials and training.
