Earlier this week I drove up from Dallas to Golden, Co. to pick up a 20' sailboat. The trailer had 12" bias ply tires load C which were rated for a maximum sustained speed of 65 mph. Which on the 800 mi return trip was excrutiating. Back in the DFW I drove over to Northern tool intending to buy a couple of premounted radials speed rating M or N. I found what I thought were 4.80-12's marked High Speed Radials ( Kenda- Load Star) However there was no speed rating indicated, just "High Speed" and load rating C. The store mgr. came over and said they were indeed radials and the load rating means they can be driven at high speed ( not even) and besides " High Speed" is relative. Then I pointed out to him the sidewall psi at the max load was 90 and no radial trailer tire is going to be run at 90 psi. Come to find out, Northern Tool has been falsely claiming their Kenda bias ply nylon tire to be radials and the "High Speed" on the tire sidewall actually means only 65 mph, exactly the same as their regular non high speed version of the tire, which is exactly the same tire. Problem is if someone throws those seeming radials on a trailer at max load and goes screaming down the interstate at 80 mph they're going to overheat and explode. Probably an honest mistake, but they sure should fix the screw up there. The store mgr. walked away convinced I was just another confused customer.
