Looking for best routes and some overnight rv parks

I dont know what kind of rv you have and how many miles you drive each day so I’ll tell you what I do when I go up to Coburg, OR. I would avoid going through central LA as the traffic is crazy making and things can unfold quickly into traffic stopping or accidents. Time of day is essential in planning your departure.

When I go from the desert, I take the 10 to the 215 to the 15 and then pickup the 395 and then head west on the 58 through Bakersfield.

From there I typically either take the 99 or go over to I 5 because I like to stop at Harris Ranch overnight. It’s boondocking in the gravel parking lot if there is room. There also a decent KOA at lost hills too if you want hookups. There’s a good park in Sacramento at Cal Expo and Flag City in Lodi. Also a decent park at Rolling Hills Casino Near Corning. Also the KOA in Red Bluff, CA is good.

When I leave Harris Ranch , I drive up I 5 and stop overnight at seven feathers rv park casino In Canyonville, OR. From there I continue up I 5 and there are decent parks along the way. One is in Coburg called Premier RV resorts. I don’t know how far north you plan to go so I can’t advise on any parks or routes north of Portland. If you want a more scenic route you can take the 101 north. Some people prefer that. There are others that will chime in. @Rich W. is traveling right now and if you search for his posts, he’s got a list of good ones too.

I’m in Lakeside just south of Reedsport right now. Paddled around on North Tenmile Lake today. When I leave here I have a couple choices to get over to 1-5 for the return trip, but either way I’ll stop at Seven Feathers for fuel - they had better prices than others last time I passed that way.

If you’re headed up I-5 and looking for someplace decent in the Redding area, there are a couple good parks on the Sacramento River just north of Anderson. Exit 673, cross the highway and backtrack 2 miles on Riverland Dr - the frontage road. JGW RV and Sac River RV parks. There is also a TA travel center at that exit.

Another little bit about JGW. We left the Oregon Coast this morning with the goal being to clear the Siskiyous (snow country) while the sun was shining. This worked well but put us on the road after dark with no reservations and I didn’t think to call until after hours.

So we just rolled in to JGW anyway, from the North this time, and they have a very easy after-hours check in procedure. Also no gate and plenty of room to pull in. Anyway you just go to the front door, look at the late arrivals envelopes on the right side for reserved site #’s so you know which ones are taken (there will also be an orange mini cone on reserved sites), pick an unclaimed site, grab a late-arrivals envelope off the left side door, fill out the form and it through the mail slot. Settle up in the morning. Couldn’t be easier and the park is easy to negotiate in the dark with wide roads, lots of pull -throughs, and easy turns into the sites.

We are only three hours from home but the last 7 miles are a driving skills-check, and it will be nice to return home in the daylight, after only driving a couple hundred miles, and with empty tanks. And after our easy, unplanned arrival tonight (7pm) I wanted to update on how user-friendly this place is. Not to mention right by the river with a very large grassy park area along the bank. Nice!

If you get there early enough (mid to late afternoon) you’ll likely find room in the parking lot between the restaurant and hotel. Its convenient and patrolled by on-site security, and you can get a pretty good dinner if you want. And they have this planned: RV Park - Harris Ranch Inn & Restaurant
