Upgrading Outlets to USB-C

I figured it was about time to replace my electrical outlets from USB-A to USB-C. Any recommendation on which brand/model I should be looking at? I assume newer Newmar coaches have USB-C? If so, anyone know what they are using?

Buy a quality product such as Leviton. Most likely Newmar uses lesser quality because of cost.

Way cheaper and less work. Maybe if an outlet goes bad, I would replace with USB-C. I still have some USB-A things anyway.

I don’t like how RV outlets are wires they use the press on style.

I have tried to use a quality outlet in the place of an Rv outlet and there is little room.

Even with a quality GaN type outlet, the extra space required for anything over 5w of power doesn’t exist.

I would use a external adapter.

In an RV I have found it more useful to use 12 volt DC based USB-C converters. Several different models available. That way your USB devices can be used without an inverter/shore power.

And these deliver 5 amps instead of 3 amps typical for USB conversion from AC.

Anywhere you have a 12 volt wire. Or pull 12 volt to where you want it. Much better to power devices in storage since you don't need the inverter active.

I'm tired of using bricks to charge my newer devices that have USB-C connectors. My coach is nearly 8 years old and I'd like to keep it "fresh". I would like to have a bedside charger for my iPad that doesn't require a brick. I'd like to have an outlet with a QuickCharge capability. As @redbaron stated, Newmar uses a press on style outlet which doesn't leave much room for a more modern outlet especially if it has a QuickCharge capability.

I suppose I could add a DC based charging capability as @turbopilot suggests. It just means adding more holes in the bedside cabinet to install this additional capability. Is it too much to ask for a modern output in a RV? Do the newer coaches have USB-C? With QuickCharge?

I think most RV's just use 110 volt to 5 volt converters because it is cheaper than running 12 volt power in addition to 110 volt. But these 5 volt devices run more efficiently converting 12 volts to 5 volts and gives the additional flexibility of not having to have 110 volts inverted from 12 volts.

By the way for the higher powered devices with bright screens (like iPads) you really want a 5 amp 12 volt to 5 volt converter. Most of the 12 volt to 5 volt converters are 3 amp so read the documentation.

It did take some time and I lost a little bit of space as I had to add 2 single gang electrical boxes in order to use the 120 volt resi style outlets.

That’s a good idea, and would work on Newmar as well. Not all floorplans have the outlet in the frame, but the nightstand should have more room too.
