Actually did water heaters yesterday and you should NOT attempt to fix it. I knew that but confirmed its function.
 
I’ve been watching this and reserving my opnion. But at this point I still agree with my initial reaction to the photo - its time for a new water heater. You can probably fix that unit but with the age and rust, its only a matter of time before the next problem and that one might be a safety hazard. I just don’t think its worth the money or risk trying to patch up that unit. I like to fix things too, and generally don’t condemn a piece of equipment for a small problem, but I would make an exception here. Also a new one will probably be considerably more efficient. You might even find a tankless one to fit which would be a nice upgrade. Just my .02 worth - good luck.

Thank you all. I found that is was the E.C.O and I just bought the replacement part. I would rather be safe then sorry. Thanks again
