"Winding Stairs Alpha Fire in Macon County near Franklin in Nantahala National Forest continues to burn today. Firefighters have been able to contain the fire at 50% now and it has grown to over 100 acres. The US Forest Service says, “The fire is roughly a mile from the Appalachian Trail. Hikers traveling north from the south end of Winding Stairs Gap towards Wayah Gap should expect smoke in the area and use caution.” Nearly 40 U.S. Forest Service personnel are working together with Macon County Fire Services and West Macon Fire and Rescue. The fire remains about a half mile from structures. "
