2015 London Aire with the original units. two of them started making a loud humming noise at start up. I replaced the capacitors inside the control boxes.
Now they run smooth and quiet! we will see how long this lasts!

Would adding soft starts have done the same thing?

Still needed the new capacitors if they were the issue a soft start would not have fixed it alone.

The capacitors were definitely bad. One of them was all puffed out. I’m thinking about adding the soft starts however I don’t think that would’ve fixed the original problem. The capacitors definitely have a lifespan and I think I reached it!

Motor capacitors going bad is a symptom. Motor overload or insulation brake down, and insufficient voltage during start up. Compressor restarts with insufficient time for the pressure to bleed down also causes overloads.
