30 amp hook up

My rig is 50 amp. If I pull into a park with only 30 amp do I need a 30 to 50 “dog bone” to plug into the camp post and a 50 to 30 to plug into the surge protector so that the sockets will match up?

I really shouldn’t let my mind wonder in the early morning. It goes off to strange things.

Yeah, for some reason I had the sockets all mixed up. I would only need the one bone.

I have one of those too which allows you to plug in to 2 x 30A plugs to get 50A. I never thought of using it instead of the single version - good idea. For now I have both.

Well I was too curious to wait til morning. So, here’s the results of initial testing:

1. On the 30 amp plug alone, my EMS display reads 50 amp service which it has never done before on a 30 amp plug. It also reads 119v on line 1 and 7 (aka 0) on line 2 - so something aint right with the thing.

1a. With a standard 50 to 30 amp dogbone (adapter/reducer) my EMS reads 30 amp service and 119v on both line 1 and line 2, as expected which is normal. So my power supply/wiring has nothing to do with it.

2. When I attempted to add the 15amp plug to the system it immediately tripped the GFI in the 15amp outlet. So no chance of using both at the same time, which after thinking about it a bit wasn't much of a surprise.

3. Just for fun, I used the adapter to run on the 15amp plug only leaving the 30 unplugged, and had while it did not trip the GFI, I had “no power source” on my EMS.

3a. Using two dogbones to go from the 50amp plug to the 15amp outlet, the GFI is still happy, and my EMS reads 30amp servce and 119v on both lines, as it should.

So in conclusion, I would say either the concept is faulty or this example is wired wrong. Either way, its going back, and I’m going to abandon the idea. I might do the continuity testing to see how this adapter is wired, but either way I’m done with the idea.

It might work without a GFI on the plug on the 15amp side, and using it on less sensitive equipment such as a stick welder, but my coach electronics are not pleased and I don’t want to upset them, much less let any smoke out.

I've never came to the place where I needed it so I assumed it would work fine. It would seem that if the were simply spliced together on both sides the 30 am breaker wouldn't pop since there was still 15amps on the other side thereby giving 45 amps total before any breaker would go. A continuity test is definitely in order before its hooked up. I've talked to an electrician before about how rvs are wired and they are a little confusing for them too. The 50amp receptacles are 220v and we only use 110v. something to do with common vs floating ground I think and perhaps this multi plug changes it
