Nearing the end of our two-week vacation traveling across Colorado, my wife and I stayed 3-nights in an RV Campground off-the-beaten-path, in Colorado Springs. On Friday, August 1st, after the previous night’s heavy thunderstorm, I was up early and went outside and I was shocked to see that someone had vandalized our 5th wheel trailer and our pickup truck.
Our 5th wheel trailer had large swastikas spray painted red, one on each side and one on the back. Walking around the trailer I was horrified to see they had also painted one huge swastika on each of both sides of my pickup truck; they covered both doors and windows on each side.
No other vehicles or trailers in the campground were vandalized. There was no mistaking that our vehicles were targeted because of a small “Team Trump” sticker on the back window of our pickup truck. This was the third of three days in the campground, and someone believed it was their right to vandalize two strangers’ vehicles. Early in the morning, while we were sleeping inside our trailer, they brought their spray paint can to our vehicles so they could visibly demonstrate their Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS), by vandalizing our property.
After calling and meeting with the Sheriff’s Deputy (he took pictures and wrote a report), and meeting with the campground owner and staff, we started our drive home. We had planned on leaving that morning and driving to a campground in New Mexico on the way home to Arizona. Rather than stay at another campground in vehicles covered in swastikas, we drove 12-hours straight home.
Looking back on this I’m glad I didn’t catch them in the act as the confrontation could have ended badly for me and/or them. And, in hindsight, their actions could have been worse as my wife, myself, and our dog could have been harmed and the damage to our vehicles could have been far worse.
One thing is clear, we won’t be visiting Colorado again except to drive through the state to other, more hospitable locations. And yes, I could have not had a sticker on my truck, but this is America where we all should value and respect our freedoms. It’s not the America I grew up in, but I don’t live in the past so things will change for us going forward (cameras, more lighting, security, etc.).
Wishing you all safe travels!
