I'm still trying to figure this one out. At the end of my last trip and after probably two years with a dedicated desk (updesk) setup I removed the desk and the jackknife sofa is going back in place. This weekend I'm headed back out for a few service visits then return home, no big journey, but my dilemma has been "which computer" am I going to use? I have laptops (MacBook Pro and Windows Dell XPS 17) and intend(ed) to use my Dell XPS 17 inch laptop which I'm still quite impressed with as my main computer. I'm just not sure how I feel doing things full time on a laptop as a software business owner and software developer. I'm used to big screens and powerful machines, but the laptop is powerful so that part is moot.

I have an iMac I really don't use, it's a 27inch. As it's the Intel based iMac I can run both macOS and Windows on it (using VMWare Fusion). What this means is it is a compact (slim) computer that can do all I need and can easily stow, i.e. place the cover on it and put it on the bed during travel. I spent the last day reloading it and prepping it for the trip but still my dilemma is which to use so I'll be taking all 3 and probably stow the laptops for now. My desired test should be to just use the laptop for the 3'ish weeks I'll be out on the road and see how it goes but I start having breathing problems thinking about that.

Moral is, I really think the iMac is an ideal computer for RVers. Long way to get to this conclusion but for those that enjoy time at the computer such as trip prep, researching things to do in the area, and other typical computer/online activities I suggest consider the iMac. Apple's most recent iMac release is a 24 inch model which I think is a perfect fit for most. The M1 processor (new Apple Silicon setup) presents some issues for me for dual use of Mac and Windows software work but we'll see what comes later. Right now my iMac is 7 years old which gives me some concern but I'm taking it along and will see how dinette computer station works once again.

I agree that the iMac is one flat out stunning computer all around. I’ve got a couple of them and they blow me away at how powerful, yet lightweight. With the SSD, they’re a solid travel companion. Yeah…you “could” run a monitor off of a MacBook, but why? And frankly, with the iPad Pro and pro keyboard/trackpad, there is hardly a need for a laptop if all you need it easy “under the arm” portability.
