Just as I'm intrigued by electric vehicles...this is intriguing, but for the "normal" person wanting an RV, I just don't see this being something we will see going down the highway or in RV Parks. I love technology, but sometimes we just go overboard. And at $150,000 for a "base" or stripped model, the average person may never see one actually heading down the highway.

We've had bumper pull, fifth wheels and a Class A over the past 25 years and this is Interesting and certainly has the cool factor, but I'll stick to traditional RVs.

A new premium Class C motor home is currently selling for between $180,000 to $300,000 today. You can buy a new LightShip and a new F-150 PowerBoost to tow it for about the same price depending on the model LightShip and the model PowerBoost you desire. This is the competition for LightShip, not a last century, high profile, slab sided Jayco RV trailer.

It does appear that the LightShip is selling. LightShip just announced this morning they are more than doubling the manufacturing capacity for the LightShip in Colorado.

And my LightShip will be on the road this weekend with a destination of Grand Canyon National Park Mather Campground. So some "average" person will see one this weekend.

For one, the competition for Lighship isn't a Super C, no one ever said let's trade our Super C in on a towable trailer with 1/4 the living space so we can go boondock in the woods for a maximum of 2-3 days before the water runs out, the waste tanks are full and the a/c has depleted the battery. The competition for Lightship is other EV towables, of which there are an increasing number. Otherwise, most towable RV buying families aren't going to spend $250,000 and 4 years at M.I.T. to go camp in the woods for 2- 3 days. They're going to buy a conventional towable, go camping, cooks some hotdogs, make smores and then put it up until next time. There's a market for both, it's not either/or, comparing one to the other is apples to oranges.

I wish the Lightship team luck. They worked hard coming up with some great innovative ideas. That said, on my recent trip up and down the east coast, I must have seen a dozen Camping Worlds and other large RV sales lots bulging at the seams with unsold RVs. There's no place left to put them. This does not bode well for the RV industry.
