How safe/easy is this route in the middle of February?Unless you are wedded to I-10 you might try a more northerly route. I-20 to I 40 then back to I-10. Our preferred routing goes something like this
The only part that will pose weather/snow challenges is the 40 though Flagstaff. Not to bad otherwise and have gone from Indiana to California in November and March.
Otherwise, the 10 is lower and warmer and not a problem.
Thank you. Never drove in mountains so I guess it's the unknown that is troublesome. The only part that will pose weather/snow challenges is the 40 though Flagstaff. Not to bad otherwise and have gone from Indiana to California in November and March.

Thank you we are planning the southern route I10 then back on I40 in May or September. We moved to FL to get away from the cold and will do FL RV trips during winter. We have beautiful parks here and not retired yet. We do want to take once we retire the around the US plan hitting states during warmer climates. I appreciate the suggestions. Enjoy!!How safe/easy is this route in the middle of February?

Yah the steepest longest most challenging grade in the country. Watch the grade pull tests on you tube for a preview as what @CaptainGizmo is referring to is a hill used to compare tow capacity's by those in the business. As a conservative “safe” suggestion for you...not knowing your driving experience and skill...
Get some miles under your belt before tackling the I-70 from Denver to Grand Junction, CO. It’s full of traffic out of Denver, long steep grade both ways as you peak 10k’, tunnels, and lots of curves on the west end. Yes, and trucks...lots of them. The makes the worst direction is going westbound since you’ll be hitting this section going downhill.
I love it, doesn’t raise my pulse off a dead sleep. But...my wife? You’ll need a strong marriage for this section. We’re still in counseling two years later, despite driving mountains all year long for 40 years! ?
