who hass used one or both of these and which one do you think is best? so many posts on this but who has used them and what are the cons of each... thanks for your help and feedback:)

I have the 50amp version and love it. No real cons that I can think of other than it’s not an auto former, but you know that’s just not what it is. It’s a surge protector.

I love that I can monitor voltages from my phone and if there is an error, I can see that from the phone too and it will send me an alert when something goes wrong.

I am guessing you use the Hughes? thanks for feedback?

In my 2019 DSDP, I installed both the Progressive EMS-50HW (hard wire surge) + the Hughes Autoformer 50Amp. This is in addition to the included Surge Protected Transfer switch.

I plan on doing the same installation in my 2022 LADP.

Each component has its purpose

Transfer Switch Surge: Provides surge protection for generator source
Progressive HW50C - Provides surge protection from shore power. Ensures voltage is safe.
Hughes Autoformer - Connected to power reel: Boosts voltage when required.

The power reel output side is a 50AMP receptical that the HAF will plug into directly. I made plug end from the input side of the PI-EMS to the output side of the HAF. WIth this setup, I can easily bypass the HAF if it takes a hit, or if my power reel flakes out, a normal RV cord can be substituted with no effort.

LOL, as a newbee this was over my head :) I plan to buy one of these (only) - any CONS for either? THANKS for the help...

You are looking at 2 different surge protectors --- so you only need 1.

The HAF is a strong contender. They both are reputable, both have life time warranty, and are both external. If I had to choose, I would go HAF because of the app on the phone, although I doubt I would ever use it.

thank you...

@redbaron ... two (2) questions
  • Does the Transfer Switch Surge that comes with the coach also protect things if on shore power?
  • I think I had read somewhere that the factory installed surge protector is a one time trip ... i.e. if it does trip you then need to replace it? Is that sound correct?

Yes, factory protects both inputs. Due to thenone and done, I chose to protect it with the hardwire version.

The op is looking at external versions, which are fine unless you are going to use the auto former. When using an auto former, it needs to be first to be plugged in. The reason is the better quality surge will shutdown with low voltage, and never give the auto former the chance to boost the voltage.

The externals could be plugged in to the autoformer, but they are designed to hang from a height of most pedestals, where the auto former will be sitting on the ground.

That's why I went hardwired.
